Comics that don't suck

I see this come up in comments on open thread Fridays and stuff, but can we collect a list of comics that don't completely fail at dealing with anyone who isn't an able straight cis white man in this post? Bonus points if DC didn't publish it. Fuck those guys. Webcomics count ( Read more... )

There's always Riot Nrrd :D

Really, it depends what you're after and what your priorities are. I'm about to go to bed, I'll have another think about this tomorrow.

I am going to politely disagree with this rec- I found the writing to be too 'look at me, I've being inclusive of everyone!' and the art nowhere near good enough to make up for it.

While I enjoy Riot Nrrd it wasn't a totally serious rec. It's just the most actively unfaily comic I could think of :)

I've.. never understood this particular criticism of Riot Nrrd. It's a comic ABOUT inclusivity issues. That's the purpose. How can a comic whose whole point is to talk about feminism, LGBT and race issues be too self consciously inclusive? And how good does your art have to be before you're allowed to discuss those issues?

(And I know ymmv, but I like the art. It's simple, but expressive, and steadily improving.)

This. Pretty much all of Brian K. Vaughn's work is worth reading.

I'm impressed by Shortpacked. It's got several gay characters and relationships (although currently they've split up, the creator has promised that won't be for long) and a good portion of the cast is non-white. I especially love it because not all the female characters have perfect hourglass figures and pinched waists. It's nice to find a comic I can read without feeling uncomfortable about myself.
