Your comment about wing!fic made me think about some others that I've enjoyed, so I thought I'd drop in a few more recs that you may or may not have come across.

An absolutely beautiful drawing of John with wings, by crysothemis (who is an amazing artist in general, if you haven't seen her work yet).

rinsbane's When Moored to the Sky is an unusual take on it, because *Rodney's* the one that gets the wings. Very nicely done, more angst than humor.

The Wing Trilogy by trinityofone is also interesting and well-done, a somewhat angsty John-with-wings. The trilogy consists of The Man Who Rose From Earth, Flux, and The Rise and FallHm, I thought there were more wing!fics out there that I liked, but I can't seem to come up with any others off the top of my head. Maybe I'll have to do a recs list of them and see what others I can find

And yeah, it is pretty funny about how wings are pretty panfandom. Of course, I wonder if that has to do with how many of us secretly wished we had wings because they'd be so cool when we were kids. :)
