[GEN] or Arthur/Eames anonymous February 10 2011, 16:37:32 UTC
"Eames, really? You've known me for how long? ____ years? You've never noticed my hearing aids before?"
Arthur and Eames are doing something badass, with the rest of the team, and they somehow end up in a river or a lake or something and Arthur's CI is just... completely ruined. Arthur ignores Eames all the way to shore. Eames talks and asks and yells at him but Arthur just keeps walking back to base or something. Finally, Eames grabs him and Arthur is kind of shocked Eames didn't know he was deaf.
If you're deaf and this has ever happened... Not only does it suck ass to replace them but you're kind of accustomed to being "hearing" and it's really awkward and hard.

I'm working on this, but it's got rather plotty and taking longer than anticipated. Stay tuned, Anon.

Eames got his phone out and sent a text:

we can't push the mtg back. i'll go alone

Arthur shifted and pulled his phone out to read the message, but he didn't roll over as he said, "No, you can't go alone. Absolutely not."

ari then? she's scrappy

Arthur read the message but didn't immediately respond and Eames knew he'd won. Arthur had a soft spot a mild wide for Ariadne and wouldn't put her in danger if he could help it.

Eames sent another text: it'll be okArthur still didn't respond. Eames yanked a pillow out from under the bedspread and threw it, hitting Arthur solidly in the head. Arthur whipped around his jaw set and his nostrils flaring ( ... )

Ariadne ignored him. "You don't have to go, Arthur, if you aren't comfortable with it. Eames and I can handle it, no problem, but we can't afford piss Whitty off ( ... )

Ariadne drove, Arthur navigated and Eames slumped out in the back-seat with a pillow he'd stolen from the hotel. He watched the endless rose and gold of the desert crawl by, bracketed by the mountains which never seemed to get any closer. Ariadne floored the accelerator and cut off a big rig. Arthur, who'd been attempting to read his iPad, sighed and put it away as the SUV his a pothole and jostled him again. He looked out the window instead at the indescribably boring stretch of sand and sagebrush.

we're all going to die, Eames texted to Arthur who'd taken shotgun. Arthur smiled when he checked his message.

Probably, read Arthur's reply.

you should tell her to slow down, your the point man

I *might* die if she plays chicken with a semi. I *will* die if I tell her to slow down again.

i can't believe your scared of a little girl

Go on, then, big man. You tell her that her with her driving we'll be three bloody smears on the interstate.

certainly, arthur. watch and learnEames leaned forward between the seats and tapped her on ( ... )

"It was one of the earliest drugs used in the US military dream-sharing project. The first successful one, actually. The compound created very stable dreams, more stable than Somnacin even, which allowed the user to stay under for longer periods of time.” Arthur pushed his sunglasses up his sweaty nose. “It was phased out, however, because it has a number of side-effects: migraines, irritability, insomnia and -- at high does -- deafness, catatonia, and cardiac arrest ( ... )

Arthur reacted first, stepping back into the goon that moved to seize him. He brought the palm of his hand up into the goon's nose and yanked the man's arm, using his own momentum against him to send him crashing into Duke's desk. Eames' own attention was quickly distracted by another of the men, looking to grab him. He had none of Arthur's grace, but he settled for putting his shoulder down and ploughing into the man like a rugby player. Unfortunately, the man was had the same mass ( ... )

Ariadne picked a motel near the airport, one considerably shittier than their usual digs. It wasn't one of the chains, though, with their centralized databases in case any of their IDs or cards had been flagged ( ... )

OH MY GOD!!!! This was brilliant. I'm also someone who doesn't have any first-hand knowledge of deaf culture although I've given it a fair bit of thought. I'm a classical musician and I lived beside a school for the deaf and it's just a subject that interests me greatly. Neither here nor there, though.

This was gorgeous and wonderful. I love how the tension in the meeting with Whitty ratcheted up with Arthur's subtly wrong volume. The bit in the refrigerator was so tender and raw. And just everything about this fic hits the right notes for me, I love it. Beautiful job, author anon!
