Ariadne drove, Arthur navigated and Eames slumped out in the back-seat with a pillow he'd stolen from the hotel. He watched the endless rose and gold of the desert crawl by, bracketed by the mountains which never seemed to get any closer. Ariadne floored the accelerator and cut off a big rig. Arthur, who'd been attempting to read his iPad, sighed and put it away as the SUV his a pothole and jostled him again. He looked out the window instead at the indescribably boring stretch of sand and sagebrush.

we're all going to die, Eames texted to Arthur who'd taken shotgun. Arthur smiled when he checked his message.

Probably, read Arthur's reply.

you should tell her to slow down, your the point man

I *might* die if she plays chicken with a semi. I *will* die if I tell her to slow down again.

i can't believe your scared of a little girl

Go on, then, big man. You tell her that her with her driving we'll be three bloody smears on the interstate.

certainly, arthur. watch and learn

Eames leaned forward between the seats and tapped her on the shoulder. "Ariadne, would you possibly mind pulling over at the next rest-stop? I desperately need to powder my nose."

"Yeah, sure thing," she said.

Eames sat back and typed out: there. feel free to greet me as a hero

Arthur twisted around in his seat and shot Eames a dirty look.

That was truly pathetic. What did you actually say?

that i require the facilities

Arthur didn't look back again, but Eames could see his shoulder shake. He taps out a quick message: You're right - I greet you as a hero.

Eames bowed and waved as though accepting the adulation of an adoring crowd. Arthur had the visor down and was watching Eames in the mirror.

can i ask you a question?

Arthur's expression goes closed and guarded; Eames can see tell from the glimpse in the visor's tiny mirror.

You just did ask me a question, but you can ask me another, he sends back.

why do you build me up buttercup baby?

Arthur's expression eased.

just to let me down and mess me around? Eames sent.

I'm not doing this, came Arthur's reply.

Eames continued: And then worst of all (worst of all!) you never call baby when you say you will

I'm still not playing.

But I love you still, Eames types. And then, I need you more than anyone, darling. You know that I have from the start. So build me up buttercup

Don't break my heart, Arthur texts back after a lengthy pause.

Arthur rolled his eyes as Eames mimed a golf clap in appreciation.

Arthur turned back to type out another message. Eames leaned back against the window, waiting. Arthur kept stopping though and backspacing and starting over.

Ariadne pulled into a rest-stop off of I-95 and Eames almost forgot that it had been his request they do so. They all visited the restrooms and Eames raids the vending machine, taking his junk food and picked his way up on the slope behind the rest-stop. He settled, careful to avoid the many piles of dog crap where people had walked their animals. Arthur climbed up, his eyes hidden by his sunglasses. They had only been outside five minutes, but already sweat beaded along Eames' upper lip and the back of his neck.

Eames held out the open bag of crisps. “Cool Ranch Dorito?”

“No thanks,” Arthur said, gingerly taking a seat next to Eames. They've landscaped the area around the squat building of the rest-stop, but the grass was as brittle and yellow as old bone.

“Adormifloxican," Arthur said. He legs were loosely crossed, his elbows on his knees.

"Bless you," Eames said, and licked Cool Ranch seasoning off his thumb.
