Just a Goddamn Hobby

Feb 24, 2015 06:58

I haven’t been posting much here (and linking to LJ) because I’ve been using my other DW account to blog yarn-wrangling stuff and haven’t wanted to keep switching accounts (and passwords). But I have been watching the latest manifestation of mundane invasion into fanfic space with interest.

The main link is waldorph tumblr

I saw bits about this linked, I think, from Twitter and FB. Yes, there's the usual misconceptions there about what fanfic is and why we do it...

However, the tumblr post, which I hadn't seen, has at least furnished me with half a dozen new fics to read!

Yes - in fact the students did choose fics they liked (for that art of the course) so they are doubly mortified to have alienated those writers (not all of whom, sadly, have been as forgiving as Waldorph).

That's rude! People or at least those who are supposed to teach them should know better.
I like your crochet analogy

Thank you. I'd like to think it's the internet that makes people abandon all sense of propriety, but this sort of thing (unsolicited criticism) never happens of Flickr or Ravelry when people post their hobby stuff.

Thank you for this link, Ina! What a fascinating and necessary discussion. I spent the entire afternoon reading all the posts (when I should have been grading papers). It's essential to talk about the ethics of fannish interaction, especially since fandom and fanfic are no longer flying under the radar of mainstream media and academic scrutiny ( ... )

Yes, things have got a bit frenzied as the signal widens - which is why I posted here.

Though the students now have the makings of a very different, and possibly more valuable project. 'Fannish clusterfucks, and how they happen.'

If I make myself a hat and wear it out in public I do not expect perfect strangers to come up to me and point out the holes and suggest ways of improving my crochet. I don’t know, maybe Berkeley fashion students are told to do this. If so, I’d be interested in their medical insurance claims.

lol This nearly made me snort wine all over my keyboard XD

Actually, given my latest craftwork disaster, this analogy may not be as accurate as all that (further particulars to follow).
