Soft cheeses are also potential culprits. Mind you, I've never worried too much about expire-by dates, even for dairy (fortnight older than it should be yoghurt? Yum!), as long as the packaging is intact. Once opened/cooked however, I try to get rid of it within a few days.

In any case, I'm very sorry about your and Bren's misfortunes and I hope you feel much better soon.
