The Last of Loncon 3 (Phew)

Looking at my FB record and the programme book it turns out that my last post was wildly incorrect - we didn’t actually get to any items on Thursday - mostly did the art show and exhibition space. We had intended to get to Bill and Brenda Sutton’s filk session but it was getting close to the rush hour so we skipped it and went home. In the end we ( Read more... )

Hi there!

Thank you for this write-up. My local fan friend had been trying to get me to go to WorldCon but I wasn't sure that it was the sort of thing for me. In the event, I was away anyway. (She went, but I haven't seen her to find out how it went yet.)

And really, you have reinforced my suspicion that it wouldn't have been my thing. Much much too big for me, by the sounds of it, and the fear of being unable to get into panels you want to attend is something that really spoils my day.

Missing Believed Wiped sounds like a fascinating one, though.

Why does no one ever ask members of other fandoms, like the WI, why they don’t make jam commercially? This is the best comparison I have seen yet! Next time someone asks this (for they will, I just know they will), I shall use it ( ... )

I know an awful lot of people who were actually running the con, so I have seen a lot of reports - though somewhat skewed to a conrunner point of view.

I do wonder whether the attempt to cater to the whole spectrum of things that might be loosely called 'Science Fiction (including 'Transformative Works - which, despite taking their modern form as a result of the high-focus on Star Trek's historic fan activity do not really belong under the SF umbrella - there was even a panel (which I didn't get to, because I dislike Sherlock) on the links between SF and Holmes (they exist - but no more than the links between Homer and SF). I'm sad I didn't get to any filk items, but I have a whole filk convention coming up next year.

What's more, the links with Homer have resulted in better books. Well, at least one series of better books. (Grins at Dan Simmons - Illium, Olympos - frowns at Brian Stableford - Dies Irae trilogy)
