Well, the plumbing is (hopefully) fixed (the chap phoned at 8 and turned up at 8.30 as advertised). We had a discussion about the durability of standard 45 year old fittings, v the problems of posh new ones (when I eventually get round to replacing the sinks in the downstairs loo and the kitchen there will be traditional capstan taps instead of ( Read more... )

Oh, I hear you on plumbing fittings! The new ones, you put them in (or someone does! not me), and they start dripping. Then you need a pilot's licence to change the washers. Plus the most exotic tools.

True. The stubby modern German taps seemed such a good idea when we had them fitted. Always test to see whether you can operate bathroom fittings with wet hands and both eyes closed (since that is how you mostly have to operate them).

I agree wholeheartedly on the taps - although I'm quite partial to the hospital style levers, mainly because my dad was disabled and we had them for quite a while so he could use the taps and I got used to them- same workings and washers though - just different handles.

They're great if you suffer from arthritic hands too.

I'm contemplating lever taps - anything would be better than the slippery cylinders we currently have.
