Helen had tried to keep herself a bit scarce, if only for Will's sake, but coming back to the hut midday on Friday meant, of course, she had to walk up on Will peeling off his shirt and working on their roof. Not what she needed to see, not when her feelings about him were already so complicated.
"I've been meaning to do the repairs," Helen said amiably enough, one hand holding her hat on as she looked up at him. "Thank you for beating me to it."
"Not a problem," he said, pulling bunches of thatch back in place to cover the place he'd been working. Not quite right, and he had to tug them back out of the way again to pry something loose underneath and try again. "It really only finally dried out enough in the last day or two to work on it."
He tugged and worked a little more and then shook his head. "Yeah, I should take a break, I guess," he said, and climbed down. It wasn't until he was back down on the ground again that he realized that he'd taken his shirt off a few minutes before, and suddenly things were strange and awkward.
Will wanted to talk to her about what had happened the other day in the clinic, but she'd asked him to pretend that it hadn't happened. He was making the effort, but it was like a huge elephant in the middle of the room (or the back yard) and he wasn't sure how much longer they could avoid it.
