Okay. This was supposed to be a crackfic (
along these lines) But, as usual, the instant I started working on it, it took a turn for the... normal and became this. So, Jack/Yusei pre-series fic. PG-13-ish. Incredibly disjointed style. Also, ew. I can't believe the first 5Ds fic I actually get finished is Jack/Yusei. How conventional. (I always wanted to get that Himuro/Yusei prison sex fic done first XD)
[no, this YGO series doesn't belong to me either]
-----------
Yusei met Jack Atlus in shop class. The other boy up to his elbows in grease, fiddling with an engine that was set up for the sole purpose of disassembling it, and shooting Yusei a vicious glare the instant he approached. Quite obviously not wanting (or needing) any help but Yusei still leaned in close and watched in silence.
And Yusei will never admit to being fascinated by the deft movements of Jack's hands.
*
It takes a few weeks (because Jack is surly and Yusei is stoic) but eventually they start talking. About horsepower and gearboxes and the fact that they'd both rather be working on motorbikes than cars any day of the week. The conversation inevitably turning to D-Wheels and Yusei says, quite matter-of-factly, "I bet you could easily find the parts around here to put one together."
Jack laughs, a sharp, cynical, sound and Yusei shrugs in response to the obvious doubt. An enigmatic little smile touching his lips.
"You want me to prove you wrong, Jack?"
"I'd like to see you try."
*
Blitz and the guys had dropped out a few months before. There was no real future in Satellite, just the Plant, so they hadn't seen much of a point in sticking out high school just to end up exactly where they are right now.
(and truth be told, Yusei would have probably joined them if it weren't for the shop and the opportunity to tinker with things to his hearts content)
They laughed too when Yusei told them about his D-Wheel plan, although with less bitterness than Jack. Nervous chuckles and vague murmurs of, "Yea right, Yusei," until Rally (sitting quiet and wide-eyed in the corner) had piped up, "Really? You think you can do it?"
"Definitely," Yusei replied, absolute conviction in his voice and at that moment the vague possibility crystallized and became something that Needed To Happen.
*
Just as Yusei said, the parts are easy enough to find. Perhaps not in the best of shape, but salvageable. And that is where the true problem lies.
Yusei doesn't own a decent set of tools for the work he needs to do.
"Why don't you just borrow them from the school?" Rally's expression completely guileless as he asks and a bark of laughter escapes Blitz's lips. Drawling, "Of course you'd think that makes for a decent solution," as he pokes the marker marring Rally's cheek.
"I just said borrow them! Just until you get the bike put together. You could do something like that. Couldn't you, Yusei?"
Yusei doesn't answer, mostly because he doesn't want the others to know how seriously he's considering it.
*
In retrospect, Yusei can admit that it was foolish. If he got caught, no one would ever believe that he was simply going to use the tools for a week or so and then bring them right back. No, if he got caught he'd wind up marked and more than likely locked up (at least for a little while) before he even had a chance to explain himself.
But he wasn't planning on getting caught.
And he definitely wasn't planning on Jack being the one to catch him.
"Fancy meeting you here... past curfew even." Jack shrugging vaguely as he continues, "Then again, it's not that surprising. There isn't many places where you could easily get your hands on the equipment you need for you little project. Am I right?"
"What do you want, Jack?" The words escaping Yusei's lips in a deadly hiss as a cold finger of fear starts to slide down his spine. Because even though he and Jack are friends in the casual, gut an engine together, sort of sense there is no real deep connection. Quite simply, Yusei just doesn't know if he can trust the guy not to squeal.
"I want to be there when you're piecing together that bike of yours."
*
Yusei doesn't ask for Jack's help, and Jack doesn't offer it. The bike is Yusei's baby, Yusei's labour of love. More than anything, Jack simply wants to watch how it all falls together. The conversation kept to a minimum, nothing more than vague bits of shop-talk and Yusei bouncing the occasional idea off of Jack who in turn offers his opinion on how to get the most out of the fourth-hand pieces of junk that pass for spare parts.
And maybe they spend too much time with their heads tilted too close together, but at some point Yusei finds himself glancing up and looking right into Jack's eyes. Jack wearing that vague little smirk of his and....
And there's really no thought involved in what happens next.
*
There's a beat-up old car that is really more frame than vehicle in the corner of the junkyard where Yusei works on his bike. He keeps the tools he borrowed stashed there, just out of sight under what's left of the dashboard.
And more and more often he and Jack find themselves sprawled in the backseat. A spring jabbing into Yusei's back through threadbare upholstery and it's cramped and uncomfortable and quite possibly the most wonderful thing Yusei has ever felt. All clumsy hands and lips and Jack's harsh breathing against the side of his neck.
