Backup schemes and devices

I need to repartition my MacBook Pro. It currently has two partitions, one running OSX and the other Ubuntu. I wanted to change the portion of the HD allocated to each, but that cannot be changed at this point (I am not surprised, actually, though if I am missing something here, please pipe up, whoever you are). So, the only way to change ( Read more... )

Check out Microcenter. I just got one from Western Digital that was 1TB for a little over $100. I think I paid $110, actually.

I was hoping someone might say something like that. WD has good reputation, and I saw models for roughly that prince on newegg. Do you recall the model? Have you started using it?

I don't recall exactly, but it's big and black and stands up on its edge. And it has a green box with gray on it. It was also in one of the major displays over near the other drives - it was a "back up your life" type of display with a bunch of other drives.

Agreed. WD does good stuff. We use a few desktop TB backups at my work and have found them solid. We don't use Macs but here's a couple WD Mac compatibles for not bad prices ($129 for 1TB, $189 for 2TB). They also have a $109 TB called...the Caviar? or something like that.

What is the format of your drive? You may be able to repartition using the hiren boot cd (free).

Well, it's a Mac OS 10.6.3, so would that be HFS+?

You can certainly resize partitions under os x, though I'm not sure any of the partition resizing tools (iPartition and even apple's own Disk Utility) will recognize the ubuntu partition, so you may lose the linux side of things.

Backing up first is a good idea, however :)

I am actually okay with blowing away the Ubuntu partition, so that is okay. When I was looking at hte Apple tool it was going to erase all my data on the Mac partition....

I've had a couple WD pre-assembled drives in the past decade and both of them died after about 3-4 years. Currently, I have a 1.5TB from newegg, which was this, which I put inside of this. Andy says that buying my own enclosure will prolong the life of the drive (he obviously picked out both). I've only had it since March so I don't know how it will do long term, but it was $140 total due to free shipping. Really easy to assemble.

I don't think it's loud, but it might be for you. I'd rather have the air flow so I don't have to worry about it. If you want to see it, let me know.

Excellent, more data! I think I will go with the same one my housemate has. Had it for over a year, and it has done well for us, AND it's only $80 for newegg...

See, I just want to tie your left hand to your right foot. And then, I don't know, go from there.
