I've worked out why I tend not to do well in essay-style exams. It's because I get to the venue and I don't care (I'm never as stressed as i should be for exams), and during the exam I have to stop myself from making terribly informal, joke-y little comments, and I don't always catch myself. We got told to "Write exams like your markers are grumpy old men and it's three in the morning and they're slightly drunk."

And also "Write like the marker hates you and you're trying to suck up to them."

But then Mr Long went "Class, nobody reads the whole essay from start to finish. Write a fantastic introduction and you're gonna get better marks because they read that then just skim. So, yeah... write good essays, but just good intros."

And Reynolds just said "We get like $3 a paper, we don't care by the 300th."

Ah, school. You should have fun. :D
