You know... there's a fairly famous SPN fic where hell really literally is some hotel in NY surrounded by a sort of post-apocolyptic burning world. It kind of didn't work for me either, except that the whole idea of the fic is being trapped in hell, and being stuck in a hotel room has some hellishness to it.

The character isn't even stuck in the hotel. She can go outside. There are all these clubs and apparently being goth=satanism. And it's vaguely making main character sad, but not the agony you think an angel in Hell would experience. So dumb.
