When she came to her head was throbbing. She didn’t remember much-she was supposed to be working on job, that much at least, but the part between walking in the door to the building and waking up tied to a chair was all a great big blur. A blur that she was not at all comfortable with to be perfectly honest, but I blur that she could fill in later once she figured out where she was and how she was going to get out of here.
She started to lift her head, and tried to open her eyes, but instead all she was met with was more blackness. Panic threatened to settle in the back of her mind, but she did her best to shake it off, swallowing hard and taking a deep breath, hoping to settle the nerves in her stomach. She wasn’t blind-she could tell that much. She could make out distinct shapes moving beyond whatever this blackness was, but she still couldn’t see, and that was what was bothering her. She could hear footsteps moving beyond what she could see, and took a breath as she tried to relax, letting her other senses take over and give her some kind of advantage in the situation. She tried to remain as silent as possible, hoping that whatever adversary this was would let her be so long as she was quiet, but that didn’t seem to be in her favor at the moment.
“I hope I didn’t do any permanent damage with that blow to the head.” The voice came with instantaneous recognition, and Bela gritted her teeth as her head snapped up, trying to find the direction that the voice was coming from. There was a soft chuckle, and then the voice same again. “I’m to your left, Bela.”
Her hands strained up to try and get to the blindfold for a moment, before snapping back at him. “Get this thing off me.”
“No,” he sighed. “Not yet, anyway.”
“Afraid to look me in the eye?”
“That, my dear, is not the case in the slightest,” he replied with what she could hear as being a smirk. The footsteps started up again, and suddenly his voice was much closer than it had been earlier. “I’ve noticed that in this little dance we’ve been doing, you always like to be the one with your hands on the steering wheel.”
“And this justifies tying me to a chair and blindfolding me how?” she said, glaring at him through the thin cloth of the blindfold.
“Let’s just-consider this an exercise in giving someone else the control.” He said, his breath right against her ear, drifting down the side of her neck. She could feel him looming above her, his body hanging just above hers, and she could feel her stomach knotting in fear. In any other situation, she might have considered it welcome to have him this close, but this wasn’t any other situation. She needed to be able to see, and she wasn’t going to be comfortable until she was. This was a feeling a vulnerability she had swore she’d never feel again, and while silently cursing herself for getting herself into this position, she closed her eyes and tried to calm herself, speaking as calmly as she could.
“I think my permission might have been required for something like that.” She tried her best to fight the bile rising in her throat, but she could feel the bitter taste against her tongue and swallowed it back-she wasn’t going to show any weakness yet. Not now.”
“Well, it also kept you out of my way,” he said simply.
“Adam-let me go,” she demanded, and his voice was starting to drift away from her.
She gave a frustrated sigh before, “Please?”
“Not unless you mean it.”
The panic was starting to come in waves, her fingers digging into the wood of the seat. “Just the blindfold, at least? You’re still the one in control if I can’t move.”
“I don’t think so, Bela,” he said with a sigh. “You’re not going to bargain your way out of this one.”
She tried to control her breathing to not make it seem like she was panicking, but she was. She needed to see. If anything he could at least grant her that much. Digging her nails further into the grit of the wood, she tilted her head up towards the sound of his voice before speaking again, her voice cracking as she did.
“Adam. Please.”
She prayed that she was giving him the vulnerability he was looking for, because she wasn’t sure how she could be more weak than this. She hated the fact that she was feeling this way, and if it had just been her tied to the chair, she would never have to let her guard down like this. But losing her sight was something that she couldn’t cope with, no matter how hard she tried, and she needed it back. Now.
She heard footsteps coming in her direction, and then suddenly light exploded in front of her eyes as the material was pushed away. Once her eyes adjusted to the sudden light, she looked up at him, confused at why he had caved.
“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were actually scared.”
Her breathing slowed and she smirked slightly, regaining her equilibrium before speaking. “Guess I’m better than you thought.”
