Summary: Christina visits Colby while he's working late one night.
Author's Note: Just a little something cute -- to try and get back in the groove of writing them again. This is also pretty much all pre-"Janus List."

There was a science to asking a girl out. An exact science that Colby was somewhat aware of, yet not too familiar with, and this was one of those moments where he wished he was. It was something that he was willing to work on, more than willing, but he couldn’t exactly find the time between his job and everything else he had going on.
Besides, he was pretty sure the science didn’t allow for asking out people you work with. Especially when they’re an AUSA and you’re an FBI agent.
He’d seen what happened with Don and Robin. He knew that the jobs didn’t mesh. And he knew that she had dated someone she worked with back in New York, before she got promoted. He didn’t want to put her in the same position again, he really didn’t. So, if he’d been smart, he would have kept his mouth shut, and avoided certain situations with her.
Like the trip to the zoo.
He shouldn’t have kissed her. He knew that was a big fat no-no. Because it didn’t get him what he wanted, exactly, either. Sure, it got him dinner with her, but now that they were back, things were just awkward. They avoided each other, and whenever they did speak, it was awkward and stunted, confined to the work they were doing and nothing that had happened in New York. It was uncomfortable, and personally he wasn’t that fond of it. He would rather have her as a friend than have this uncomfortable silence between them.
“So do you have anything yet?” she sighed, leaning over the thin wall of his cubicle as she arrived at his desk. It was starting to get late but they had just caught a case earlier in the day, so the whole team was working late on getting it solved. Colby looked up at her and raised an eyebrow.
“We only caught the case a few hours ago,” he said, giving her a look. “We don’t even have a cause of death yet.”
Christina sighed heavily, before shrugging. “Yeah, I know, but the bosses are already breathing down my neck to get a conviction on this one. Vic’s pretty high profile.”
“Tell me about it. We’ve got the media all over the place on this.”
“Want me to see what I can do to get them to back off?”
“Nah, it’s alright,” he said with a shrug. “I think we’ve got it covered.”
“Suit yourself,” Christina nodded. There was a long silence as he went over the rest of his paperwork, almost to the point where he thought she had left, before she spoke up again, playing with her fingers and sitting down on the edge of her desk. “Look, Colby-I know that things have been weird between us lately-”
He tried to play it cool, shrug it off like he usually did. “No weirder than usual.”
“Please don’t do that,” Christina sighed, giving him a look. “I know that-there’s something here.”
“Maybe there is, but I don’t want to push things, Chris,” he said with a shrug. “I know how awkward dating someone you work with can be. I don’t want things to be weird if it doesn’t work out.”
“You know, Colby, I didn’t think you were such a pessimist.”
His head shot up at that one, giving her a strange look. She smirked slightly in his direction, before moving over to sit on the edge of his desk. “I like you a lot. I know we work together, but look at how we work-we’re both in the FBI building on a Friday night when normal people would be out trolling clubs with friends. We don’t really have the time to go out and find someone else we really like. Besides, I’m really not one to question a good thing when I see it.”
He was quiet for a minute, tilting his head to the side slightly. “So you wouldn’t mind if we gave dinner another shot?”
“Not at all,” she nodded. “In fact, considering the disaster that that was, I’d rather pretend it never happened and say I owe you dinner for the zoo thing.”
“You would?”
“I would.”
Colby watched her again, before nodding, and looking down at his files. “I think I can do that.”
“Great,” she sighed, and he could see the smile she was flashing him. “So after we wrap this case?”
“So long as we don’t get stuck with another one, I’m game.”
“Good,” she nodded. “Call me if you need me for anything legal?”
“Can’t I call you just because?” he smirked and she rolled her eyes.
“I meant in regards to the case, but yes-calling me just because would probably be nice too.”
“Good to know.”
“Glad you think so.”
