Please go and read this amazing article from the Guardian, which covers a sort of philosophical history of kindness, and how we've created a taboo out of it and label kindness a weakness despite continually being drawn to it. Really, best read in a long time.

Why don't we have more newspaper articles that discuss philosophy?

Because articles that make you think don't make money. People are much more used to having articles tell you what to think...hence the popularity of Fox News.

Thank you, I enjoyed that article and agree. It's essentially why I don't get on well with game theorists and libertarians. Have you ever seen "The Trap", a doco by Adam Curtis? I think it's available on google video.
