There are kids whose only meals are the ones they get in school in every city I know of, but the rural areas in Appalachia (like this Kentucky school district) are worse than some because that's already an economically depressed area and it's so remote that it's difficult for people to get in and make any changes, and too far from opportunities for the people to take advantage of any that are offered. :( Some cities have recognized that this is going on and now serve free breakfast at school for all children, and they can apply for free or reduced price lunch. In the summer, there are now programs where the kids can get meals through educational and remedial enrichment programs. It's actually a good way to get these kids better prepared academically, because they're traditionally lagging in school achievement and the literacy rate is lower there, so if the school district offers extended year-round school and the parents put the kids there so they'll get fed, the kids catch up while they're in it and everyone benefits
