Food for thought: The Mind of God Problem

Apr 03, 2007 00:13

Right after losing a fight with a baby mouse (it got a hit on me when it ran across my foot, I completely failed to hit it) I've decided that physical combat isn't my forte ( Read more... )

The Discordian says: "anything goes and logic is out of the window."

Yeah, a mathsy friend of mine was telling me that actually, even the simplest "2+2=4" equation requires reams of assumptions and proofs, and even went as far as showing me the pages in the book that explained said assumptions and proofs.

Thus, we can't even prove the assumption that proves that everything we know is based upon total assumption.

The ability to transcend time is enough to send one's head into a melty mess, but just to give an example - we know that a 2-dimensional being only sees and exists in a cross-section of the 3-dimensional world, thus, by extension, a 3-dimensional being such as ourselves only sees and exists in a cross-section of the 4-dimensional world (mmm, hypercubes).
Assuming this to be the case, and assuming deities to be greater than or equal to a 4-dimensional being (but probably greater than), they existed before *and after* we do, thus they "already had the idea" because they've already seen it through "premonition" (which isn't premonition to them because they exist in the now simultaneously with the back then), which means their concept of "time" is completely different to ours, as it is the fourth dimension to us, it would only be the third dimension to a two-dimensional cartoon person as they would be unable to navigate the spatial third dimension and so on.

I hope that made sense...

I'm going to have to second that.

Seriously, philosophizing (is that a word?) is fun and all but, at the end of the day, people will believe in things for entirely emotional/illogical reasons.

My proof of faith is in a nice breeze, walking along the forest path to campus, getting free fudge samples and having brilliant friends.

And, to reiterate the most important point of all this...

..crown atop a turtle.
