So I've had my first couple of days at Google and I figure I owe you all a post.
First of all it's all the things you'd expect, everyone's very company focused and quite nerdy. I was one of 6 starting on the first day, though everyone else was from a sales or business area and not at all geeky. Unfortunately the logistics seem to have gone a bit astray, HR are all in the US at the moment so I have to finish my orientation next week but I got a very long run down on Information and Physical Security, a Facilities tour and a lot of time a the TechStop.
There's a few things here you'd expect, the intranet and internal web services are amazing as are the support options for everything you need. Most of my team aren't as technical as me because we work in a solutions and client services area rather than an engineering department. That being said I think there's real opportunity to make this job what I want of it and they're all looking for me to take on some of the harder work given my background.
Most of the last couple of days has been in training but it's moving a little slow for me. That's okay though because I can take my machine anywhere with internet and there's plenty of material to read and desk/machine set up to do. Sadly it appears that my product doesn't run on Mac yet and I can't use Parallels or Boot Camp so I'm stuck on a windows machine for a while but they did give me a lovely new Win7 notebook and a 30 inch monitor so I can't really complain.
The free food and caffeine is a bit dangerous. I'm going to have to start being sensible about my food choices. The food is wonderful though and there's plenty of healthy options; 3 meals a day are served plus snack stations, good quality espresso machines and free soft drinks. I'm going to need to adjust my supermarket shopping to match.
The people are all lovely and the nerd quotient is high (hooray!) there's even a few faces I didn't know were here like ex-Griffith alumni. All in all it's been a very quiet week compared to the usual sprinting run of the Optus IT Delivery areas, but I'm sure it will get busier over time and so far I'm really enjoying working here. Expect me to be a fully inducted Kool Aid drinker in the near future.
Unfortunately policy controls a lot of what I can show on the internet so don't expect lots of pictures of the facility but I can definitely show off the view out my office window. :o)
