The three days had been up.  John had wandered this strange London that was so much like what he remembered, but equally foreign to him.  He didn't like feeling like a stranger in what he would have normally considered his own home.  He didn't like how limited he was, confined to such a small area of London.  It would have been best if he could ( Read more... )

Helen had spoken with both Kate and Will in the interim and was...well. Cautious. She did not think that John was stupid enough to try something in public, though, and thought if she stayed just outside the Abbey and didn't go anywhere private with him, she should be safe enough.

She'd gotten the flowers but hadn't known what, exactly, was appropriate to do with them. She hadn't wanted to throw them out (though Will had wanted to) but as a married woman, receiving flowers from an ex probably wasn't proper even without hers and John's specific history.

Every time he saw her, even when he had been trying to kill her, his heart gave a little lurch. The years had done very little to lessen his feelings for her, even if they weren't reciprocated in the same way. He refused to believe she felt nothing for him, she couldn't give him as many chances as she did otherwise.

"Thank you for coming, Helen," he said, smiling as he stood when she neared. He knew that she would, although he half expected Will or Kate to accompany her. He was glad that if she had brought them, they were at least waiting out of sight.

"I don't break my promises, John," Helen said quietly, conceding to sit next to him on the bench even if she wasn't going to get too close. It was too many years of caution and reserve between them for her to immediately fall back into his arms and she did love Will now, fully and completely.

"Are you well?"

"No you do not," he said, sitting down next to her on the bench. "And since I do not see the Isand Police Force lurking about that you have spoken with Kate and believe her?"

That was amusing indeed, that she would have to be the one to stand up for him. Assuming she didn't lie of course.

"And I am doing well for a man trapped in a personal hell, I suppose."
