dancing, and other related topics

So I have this silly idea about a first dance for the wedding that occurred to me last night as I was lying in bed, and I'm becoming more and more enamored of it the more I think about it. It's this: what if, instead of a more traditional [Western] song, we played Arabic music? We could do one of the traditional Arabic line dances. It would ( Read more... )

Hee. That's actually really cute, even if it isn't really like what I would do. See, doesn't that look so much more fun than just having one couple dancing? Although it probably takes a fair amount of coordination. Mine is the best of both worlds! We just have to pick one of the simple line dances. *grin.

Honestly, scheduling isn't really what I'm worried about. If people can come, they can come, if they can't, they can't. I'm just thinking I need to make sure that everyone coming knows at least one person there aside from me or Mike. I've been to weddings where that was not the case, and they were significantly less fun for me. If we need to cut down the guest list, that'll probably be the primary criterion on my side at least.

It does indeed. I think it's a wonderful idea.

I suppose that makes sense, although it's less of a problem if people can bring dates (I've never figured out whether that's traditional or not). More an issue with friends than with family, I imagine.

That actually sounds like a really, really lovely idea! Not just in sentiment, but (hopefully) in execution, as well...and actually, when you're talking about the traditions mixing, as far as the dancing goes, I should point out that you are extremely lucky. Filipino culture has been influenced a lot by Spain, as of course Puerto Rico also has, and the Arabs influenced Spain, so in theory you're good! XD But seriously, I do know that most Latin American countries have at least some variation of a line dance, and I can hardly see why Puerto Rico wouldn't (if nothing else, you could alternate the dabka with a conga line, which would be both fun and hilarious, especially if people were starting to get drunk XD ( ... )

*laugh. That is a long chain of influences to count on meeting. Sounds like a game of telephone. Or like how French, German, and Sanskrit all came from Indo-European. Although to be fair, that's probably a longer chain. Also, o_o to mixing the musics together. Is that even possible? Well, I guess it is or you wouldn't have mentioned it. Beyond me; I'd have to get someone else to actually hand me an example before I would understand the concept. Also worth mentioning, I wouldn't intend for this to last very long. Most line dances don't, after all. And then we could all break up and segue into regular dancing (which we know I'm all for) after having conveniently lured a whole bunch of people onto the dance floor with a simple line dance! XD

Also, I expect the whole family thing will help with Mike's parents, even if it doesn't completely erase their misgivings. Well, as I said, need to sort out budgets. Work work!
