Dream 26
“Hikari-chan, can you help me?” Machiko showed her the equation. They were studying together at the District Library.
“Un, what is it?” Hikari looked at Machiko’s book.
“The given equation was y2 = 2x3 + 6x2 and the question asked to draw a linear graph. How to do it?”
“Okay, just simple. First you must get a single x on the right side and a single number. In this case, you can choose either to divide with x2 or x3. If you choose to divide with x2, then it’ll be y2/x2 = 2x + 6. The left side should be divided by the same coefficient too.
If you choose to divide with x3, then it’ll be y2/x3 = 2 + 6/x. Got it?”
Machiko nodded.
“To draw the graph, you should make a table and find the corresponding value of each variable. For example, when x=1, what is y? List just as much as you feel enough. Then, plot the graph before joining it through a best fitted line. You’re done!”
Machiko smiled. She understood it very well. (Guys, do you too?) “Hikari, thanks a lot. You’ve help me a lot and your explanations are always sound simple.”
Hikari chuckled. “Maths is never difficult, you know,”
“Then, why are you not majoring in Math?”
Hikari grinned, “Because I want to explore something new,”
They looked into each others’ eyes only to find the sincerity of a friendship was obviously flashed there. Smile carved on both lips. Hikari was about to say something when the door was opened, revealing two lanky guys.
“Oh, you came!” Hikari exclaimed as she saw Kota with his unknown friend - well, at least to her! “Wait! I’ll pack my things,” She quickly packed her things - books and stationary.
Kota just looked at her while his friend seated him on a chair directly opposite of Machiko.
Machiko’s heart throbbed faster as she realised who the guy was. She could not even make an eye contact, so her sight fell on the table.
“Machiko, something came up, I’ve to go. Is it okay if I left you here?” Hikari asked her before having a friendly hug.
“Don’t worry, I’m here!” the other guy gave his guarantee.
Kota and Hikari smiled. “Machiko, I go first. Have fun!” Hikari winked her eyes at the last sentence.

Both Yuto and Luisa were about to open their books when Yume suddenly came. She looked at Luisa for a while - perhaps she had just noticed her existence! Pity Luisa!
“Oh sorry, I haven’t greeted you. I’m Yume. Sakura Yume,” she introduced herself to Luisa.
“Luisa, Kitagawa Luisa,” They were handshaking.
“So, both of you are studying?” the two younger students nodded.
“Come one, this is holiday,” Yume quickly closed up the books. The two could just look at her with big invisible question mark painted on.
“Have fun yo! Don’t just study. Your brains need rest. Let’s go to the theme park!”
“Mom?” Yuto asked. He felt annoyed. I know you are clever. But, don’t treat us like we’re same with you! He was protesting inside!
“Like I said before, don’t worry so much. She’s alright. The sooner we go, the sooner we’ll get home,” Yume convinced him. “Luisa, let’s go,” She grabbed Luisa’s hand.
Luisa was confused too. But she could do nothing since it was not her home. She strained her face, looking at Yuto - asking his opinion.
“But, Yume-chan, you can’t treat us like this. We’re not as good as you. We need to study,” finally Yuto managed to spill it out.
“Dude, you can always study at the theme park,” Study at the theme park?
Both sighed. Yume did not giving them any choice - she took all their books in order to make sure they followed her.
Looking at each other, they shrugged.

After Kota and Hikari leaving, Machiko continued doing her work as well as trying to ignore the guy in front of her. As she went through the task, she realised that there were some difficult questions that she could not answer. What should I do? Usually, Hikari will help me. Should I…? And she was looking to the guy in front her - Yuya - who was exploring an art book.
They seemed to be mentally connected when Yuya looked back at her.
“Emm?” Machiko shook her head.
“Need help?”
“Nope,” she denied. Quickly, she looked back at the opened-book.
But Yuya was faster. “No need to lie,” He grabbed the book from her and showed her how to solve the question.
When he was about to return back the book to her, accidentally he made skin contact with her. Their eyes met in shock, especially Machiko and Yuya was smiling, trying to normalize the awkward situation.
Moment later they released each other and back to their normal position. Machiko tried to finish her work soon so she could ‘escape’ from him while Yuya continued his ‘exploration’ through the art book.
However, approximately five minutes later, Yuya gave up. It was his nature - could not focus on book for more than 15 minutes. His eyes wandered around, searching for anything interesting to do. It was true that he wanted to spend time with her, but suddenly his ideas dried up.
He closed the book and finally decided to observe Machiko. Well, perhaps that’s the only thing he could do!
“Machi-chan,” he whispered her name. Pretty obvious, in library we could not make any noise, so whispering was the best option.
Hearing that, Machiko raised her head, looking straight to him although she could not stand the sharp but somehow had calming effect look.
“I like you,”
Machiko’s eyes rounded. Really? “That’s not a joke,” Machiko replied in monotone to overcome her own nervousness.
“I’m not joking. I’m serious,” Yuya crossed his arms and glared at her seriously. He moved his face closer making her avoiding herself and leaning backward.
Looking at Machiko’s worried face like she was facing a ghost, he burst into laugh.
“No need to freak out. I was testing you,” the laugh was still there. “Well, perhaps my assumption was true.”
“What assumption?” she asked. There’s mad in the tone.
“Nothing important to know,” he chuckled. “But it was true that I like you,” he paused. “I like your passion in study and improving yourself. Keep it up!”
Ending his word, he left. Pretty close of a confession, ne? And he chuckled more.
