In which I get political...

It's not like me to get political very often, but I felt I couldn't let this pass without comment. This evening there was a Party Political Broadcast on all five major UK channels. For the BNP. Now I'm all for freedom of speech, and I accept that it means that the douchbags of the world get a voice as well as the sane people but I find it hard to ( Read more... )

The whole BNP thing is getting a trifle scary now. And ffs, their racist policies are just stupid anyway - no one in the entire world is purely British. Even if all your ancestors lived here for the past thousand years, you're still French/Scandinavian/Roman/whatever beyond that. And beyond that you are, eventually, African. People are people wherever they're from, and everyone should have the same rights - I thought that was common sense in the 21st century!

Ergh, sorry. I can get really vehement about this. And I don't really 'do' politics as such, so that's saying something.

That is WAY too scary.

Here's hoping the facebook campaigns for the Lib Dems actually help them and stop the likes of the BNP.

I am watching the elections over there with much interest. The BNP makes my stomach turn and I hope beyond hope that they get skunked in the polls. Fingered crossed for you folks!

I knew this crap the BNP was spouting sounded familiar from something...

Cripes. Life imitating art, I guess. But this is pretty much it for them. "RULE BRITANNIA - BUT SEND THE IMMIGRANTS HOME!"

Sad, sad sad. I love Britain and I hope that the BNP stays a minor little noisemaker and gains no real traction.

Life imitating art imitating life!

The real problem is that they are gaining supporters. They've tried very hard to separate their new party image from the old National Front (which is basically what they are) and portray themselves as representing old fashioned values (whatever the hell they are) and sadly people are falling for it. Factor in voter apathy leading to a low turnout in the last couple of elections and.... We can only hope that come next week enough sensible people actually get off their bums and vote.

My friend in Nottingham told me today that if they come around to her doorstep she will inform them that they both (her and her husband) had family members give up their lives to keep people like the BNP out of Britain in 1939 and will none too kindly ask them to remove their carcasses from their property.

I never thought I would see the day that I would see Nazis waving a Union Jack. But Sinclair Lewis said of the US "When Facism comes to the United States, it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross", so I guess that sort of thinking can come in many guises.

Fingers crossed for you all. I would hate to see them get a toehold and then hold on.
