Okay brilliant essay. I watched Dark Angel right from the start of season 1 so I was a fan before the arrival of Alec but I have to admit that I probably only watched season two because of him. It was a case of hoping that he would show up in each episode. I think at the crunch point - with Alec they finally developed a 'real' character with great potential to grow.

However I think some of the credit needs to lie with Jensen and the essence he gives characters (also probably his hottness) because honestly I was probably hooked on him from the moment he first appeared as Ben in season 1. When Max killed him off I was like nooo. Already at that point I was hoping that they'd keep him around. When they introduced Alec I was over the moon.

So almost a decade later I still read fanfic and think about my Smart Alec...

I don't know whether you'll see this, but thank you for commenting! My first response was has it really been nearly a decade? But yeah...it has (I came to it a little later, because I was in the UK, so the show was cancelled by the time I got into the fandom). I think Alec's poetential for growth and, indeed, his development over season 2 was really engaging, as indeed was/is Mr Ackles.
