I think there's a song by Pavement--I think it's "Two States" (about the periodic fantasy of splitting California in two)--that has a refrain where they yell/sing "40...MILLION...DOLLARS" over and over.
I wish they'd split Massachusetts into two states. I'm sick to death of seeing my taxes sunk into a hole in the ground (literally) while the bridges I use every day crumble to ruin.
As for Texas - they were a separate country once. Perhaps they should consider becoming one again?
Na, you gotta support Boston. Now a more progressive tax code, that I can get behind--you *personally* can't afford to foot the bill-- but the cities get no more per capita help than the rural areas--did you see that thing after the election on red vs blue, who pays and who benefits? The urban areas generate a lot of economic activity and have a lot of needs.
Actually, the vast majority of the state's DPW budget *has* gone to the Big Dig. The four western counties, where I live, are seriously behind on public works projects and repairs because of the enormous cost of the Big Dig.
Not to mention that we have a governor who, quite seriously, claimed during a senate run against Ted Kennedy in 1994 that of *course* he knew the state, that he'd been everywhere between Boston and Worcester. Ted promptly challenged him to a debate in Holyoke, which is an hour west of Worcester.....
I most surely didn't intend to defend the Gov! But the DPW budget is only one part of the state's total budget. People in California also pay taxes that are part of the federal budget, which has supported the big dig also--and rightly so, IMO

I would seriously support dividing this country in half: red and blue. See how long the red states survive without us. They elect the president and dictate our lives; we support them financially so they can do so. Where is the earth logic in that?
