What is it that makes you sad: that you had no money and didn't know it (guilt your mom had to bear this alone) or that you DO have money now ("survivor guilt")?
Regardless, I admire your compassion for your mom. I hope my son is as thoughtful/helpful to me.
Now, I sort of feel like a dick, because I know you've seen me in the recent years which, moreso and moreso, depict me as rather spoiled and my family's money situation as pretty well-off. It wasn't always like that, though. When I was under ten, we didn't have much money at all--we ate the same boring food night after night and we didn't get whatever we wanted. My parents did a good job of saving and buying us a couple nice things, but it was always an issue.
Now, though, we are able to buy just about whatever it is we want in a reasonable amount of time without much worry whatsoever. It's a lot different. But, like you, yeah, when I look back and think on the past it makes me pretty sad about it all.
Maybe it is because we know better now, but I think it's probably best this way. When you are a kid you don't need that stress of having no money--it's good that our parents can shelter us from it.
