I am a gamer, but do not own or play xbox. This is a major problem with ALL online games. I've seen this type of behavior in just about every single online game I've played, and the severity can range from a casual slur to full on hate and rage. Either way, it is unsettling. I think, for the most part, that these people are so entrenched in their own bubble that they don't realize how big and diverse the rest of the world is. Joe Six-pack from Bumfuck Christian Town USA lives in a world where this kind of behavior is acceptable and the norm. When he enters the online world he is exposed to lifestyles that he has been trained to hate, and attack. I've been attacked in-game simply for being from New Orleans. Seriously ( ... )

I'd really really like to see some sort of confirmation of this from MS.

Also, on WoW my brother had to change his name from SatanDog. From what I remember the reason wasn't that it was offense but that it wasn't roleplayee enough for the server type.

I'd like to see the official MS reply too. Maybe the publicity from Consumerist will generate one.

Aha, they did. Near the top of their terms of service it lists what is and isn't allowed in their user profile text.

As I said elsewhere, I'd also like to know what her actual profile said. All we have is an accusation without evidence.

I'm not saying she's right or wrong, just that I lack the information to even know.

I whole heartedly agree that bigotry and hatred are wrong and those that condone words or action as such should be sent straight to the chair.

However..why did she feel the need to say she was a lesbian? Did she just come out or something? I don't feel the need to go around saying, "Hi my name is Lauren. I [insert activity here], and I'm straight." Unless her character was gay, and this was a Big Gay Roleplay, it really is unnecessary to say anything of the sort.

And in all reality (pun intended), she's in a game. probably sitting in her pajamas in her living room. by herself. on a couch. So these "people" can be ignored and the game easily turned off as they are not sending her actual hate mail or spray painting swastikas on her door.
