Shit, starting out in making graphics would be less daunting if we all had a mentor, right? Well, talking in these comms can serve as a general mentorship and guidance system for anyone who cares to read what a bunch of (mostly old) makers have to say! That said, it's also really cool to see what newbies are thinking and feeling as they venture out into the graphics world, so I wish more of them would voice their thoughts and tell us how they're getting on in their new hobby!
All we can do, all anyone can and should do, is be as open, friendly and respectful as possible. :)
This is exactly what makes me wonder why I've specifically been singled out for secrets about friendliness here. Tons of other makers and icon fanatics are doing exactly the same stuff as me. Speaking as an individual, I'm just doing what I feel is necessary if I want to see the gaphics community live on and thrive despite boatloads of people running off to tumblr. It's actually a self-serving reason, really. Besides, all that entitlement crap that seemed like a problem before has been fading cuz many of us are doing our part to show love and respect and understanding of one another and our work.
I like addressing people by their names. It just seems like a normal thing to do, and I think it's nice to feel personally acknowledged. Besides, lots of people hate pet names, like "dear" and "honey," so I try not to use those so much. (I sorta fail miserably though.)
I get nervous addressing people by their first names out of nowhere. I don't want anyone to get freaked out and wonder why I know their names, but with makers, it's usually cuz I see people introduce themselves in their elite apps or friending memes. I'm glad I didn't scare you by calling you by your first name, Jana. :)

I think most of them, most icon makers in general, are more about making icons than talking about icons though.
