Solid Color Layers

Can anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial or something that explains how to use color layers? I've been searching the tags and archives, and the only link i found that i thought might be helpful went to a deleted journal:( I'm fairly competent in photoshop, but i usually use selective coloring, color balance, curves, etc. I don't really ( Read more... )

Well, this doesn't really help with explaining why, but it gives outcome for some colors. I got it from a tutorial a while ago. :)

for me, sometimes understanding the formal reasoning/definition then converting it into simple terms helps.

Overlay “mixes colors between layers, preserving the highlights and shadows to reflect the light and dark areas of the layer colors”

Simply, the solid color layer adds intensity to the layer underneath. i noticed mostly intensifies the color that your using. like in wildflower4evr example, the blue overlay intensifies the background and the light gray overlay brings out the skintone and hair ( ... )
