Happy New Year, icon_talk!

As promised, it's time for our second round of Ask the Maker! Here you'll get the chance to ask icon makers who sign up, questions about their icons/graphics. You can ask for tutorials, guides/walk through, or simply ask a question regarding their work so the makers can compile a Q&A post, with the answers to all the questions ( Read more... )

I unfortunately didn't save the psd for that one, so I've recreated it and gotten this as a result:

It's as much of a mystery to me as it is to you! I can't even find the original image I used!
From what I remember, I duplicated the base and set it to soft light, then duplicated it again and set it to screen. Then I applied a black and white gradient map set to soft light. Then I upped the contrast (a lot). I'm 100% positive I used levels to adjust the light and the shadows! Then I used selective color and changed the blues, yellows, cyans and greens so that they were less blue and WAY more yellow. I don't think I did anything to the reds or magentas. After that I did a screen color fill layer with a REALLY dark purple-y color. & there is a texture set to screen in there but I never saved it and I don't know how I made it.

So in other words, I'm completely hopeless at this iconning business and I'm really sorry. THIS IS WHY ONE OF MY NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS IS TO SAVE EVERY PSD. :x

I'd love to see your process for making textures and how you use some of your own.

Write something titled "TEXTURE QUEEN TELLS ALL" where you show us your texture-ways. Pretty please!

Also tips (not necessarily full blown tuts, as those can be time-consuming and I don't want to be a bother) on how to color/contrast like this, this, this & this (purple tinted shadows specially, in the last one)
