Happy July everyone, it's time for round 7 of Ask the Maker here at icon_talkHere you'll get the chance to ask icon makers who sign up questions about their icons and other graphics. You can ask for tutorials, guides/"How to", or ask any other questions related their work so these makers can create a Q&A post with the answers to all the questions they get

What can we request from you (tutorials, Q&A, guides etc. .PSDs are not allowed: Anything! Though a bit of a warning, I've been terribly disorganized with PSDs lately so I'll just tell you if I can't provide walkthroughs for certain icons.

haha, i'm always late to these things XD

Anyway, I can definitely do tutorials for the first two but I'm missing the PSD for the 3rd. I vaguely remember the coloring process was somewhat similar to this plus I probably painted on a light greyish brown tone on her skin (with brush on multiply, lowered opacity.) The background is one of those flower stock textures from tumblr (with a dark reddish brown color fill layer on hard light) and the font is bombshell pro. Hope that helps!

Don't worry about the third then. The first two will be more than enough and the first one is the one that really impressed me, so nevermind about the third. Thank you for giving me a vague description on what you did, though. I'll just try out different things. :D

gosh, I just love your work (I've always got at least one of your icons in my 15 slots). I'd love a tutorial/rambling walk-through about your colouring process and like how you conceptually design an icon. Cause it's always stunning. This antique-y muted thing you do is amazing. These are some of my favourite of your icons, so you know what I'm referencing lol. Also maybe how you utilize the slightly-out-of-focus technique? lol if this request makes any sense. :)

aww, thank you so much! and your request does make sense! it might take me a while to gather my ~thoughts though. in the meantime, i've talked a bit about my process about composition--especially in regards to texture and text-- here.

unfortunately, most of the icons you provided are old ones and I've lost the PSDs so I can't use them as examples in the post. The coloring of the Buffy icon was based off this if you want to know how I get the super pale effect. I do have the PSD for the outlander one but it's a messy mess so I'm not sure if I can make a coherent tutorial from it either.

aaaand lastly, the slightly out of focus technique is probably because (1) I have a weakness for blurry/in motion caps and (2) I'm terribly nearsighted and no matter how much I squint I can't tell if my icon is properly sharpened lol XD

I think I'm missing a step on the PSD of the arya icon but I can definitely make the black widow one! They're similarly made anyway (same textures, soft light gradients, etc...) haha
