It's July 15th and it's time for round 5 of Ask the Maker! here at icon_talkHere you'll get the chance to ask icon makers who sign up questions about their icons and other graphics. You can ask for tutorials, guides/"How to", or ask any other questions regarding their work so the makers can compile a Q&A post with the answers to all the questions they get ( Read more... )

I'd love to know about how you use textures in your icons (for general texture, for composition elements or something completely different). Also, favourite textures &/or texture makes?

walkthrough for the 2nd icon here!

I seem to be missing a step on that 1st icon--it's one of those times where I kept changing my mind--so i'm not sure if i can write a walkthrough for it. i'm still trying to figure it out though! it may just take a while ^_^

Yeah, don't worry! I just was interested in that green pale coloring it is so subtle and soft.. and those textures!
Thank you so much for the ones you've already made. All are perfect and really useful. I've already use some things to inspire me :)

I really can't figure out what I did but if you'd like to experiment on your own, the color fill layers are a combination of: light green in hard light, a couple blue exclusion layers (lol), a brown one on screen and a dark green layer on overlay. and of course numerous light grey ones on multiply. I'm not sure how helpful this is but I hope you find something you can work with.

and it's actually just one texture from the Indian Woman set by innocent_lexys

and you're very welcome :)

I'd love to know your process to make this sort of coloring? Making it look like an old movie somehow.

made a walkthrough for the first icon here not sure if it helps because i think a lot of the credit for the old movie-ness goes to the original picture i used (taken by the Hannibal director David Slade) and i don't think i've ever attempted to do it with normal caps.

as for the extreme close ups, i didn't really do anything special to those icons, just the paint daubs filter (brush size 1, sharpness 1 then edit > fade to your pleasure). also, choosing caps that are already close ups (like the 2nd one) helps. idk, i've always had difficulty making extremely close cropped icons except when it comes to hannibal caps so i think there must be something with the lighting on that show lol. like i wouldn't even dare try this with buffy caps or s1 doctor who caps. XD

Is it possible to ask for a sort of general text guide? You use text so brilliantly and creatively, and it's often a part of the composition (well, text always kind of is, but I hope you know what I mean). I'd just like to find out about your thought process when you use it, basically. c:
