similar to earth and modern era tech. but magic! magic is unpredictable (chaotic/wyld-ish), though, so its not used much in society. when people (humans or other sentient species) use it there's always a chance of something going wrong, never less than 10% or more than 95% (more practice in it can raise one's success level; lack of success is ( Read more... )

when used (consciously) by sentient beings, magic is usually used in basic spells. often elemental sort of things, like wind/fire/etc (elements depend on what the caster is attuned to, so may be western or eastern or 'new' elements like 'electricity/plastic/whatever.' may also apply to more vague concepts, like 'happiness/depression/fulfillment/curiosity/etc.'), but some more basic things like "healing" or "light/darkness." complex non-elemental (or combined elemental, its really depending on how the user sees it--to magic all is just magic--) spells like "summon sandwhich" and "turn lead to gold" also exist, but tend to be harder to master.
due to the chaotic nature of magic not many people practice it, but a few groups dabble in it for various reasons (often religious/spiritual). hybrids tend to have more of an affinity for magic than non-hybridized creatures (and nonsentient hybrids sometimes use very simple magic instinctively) due to their magical background.

has an affinity for 'wind' magic, but doesn't know any.
all hybrids have the capacity to learn how to shift into non-hybridized forms (this is easy, but learning to shift into completely different forms is harder than it would be for a human), jacob doesn't know of this possiblity.
knows no magic, but he has the capacity to LEARN it. in panfandom setting maybe can learn any sort of magic that's teachable? due to his inborn chaotic-magic nature, however, will still have the possiblity of spells going wrong like if he'd used magic from his verse.
has not even considered learning magic, but it'd likely be a new toy/shiney if he realized he could~

I really like this. Especially the detailing that animals and plants? can be changed by this wild-magic and use it. I've read very very little that touches on that at all in all the fantasy stuff I've ever read and it makes me squee on the inside.

I guess the only thing that comes to mind as a question, is how do people NOT go mad, or insane from the magic? Are the nodes themselves ( if the dragon-lines aren't) - mappable to avoid? Are there safe-areas at all?

It sounds like the hybridaztion could almost make people or things extinct?

I like it lots though! And especially the unpredictable nature of it. Sounds like loads of fun to play with.

nodes are rare and never move (well the centers never move, the edges may waver but not by much), that's really one of the few things about the magic that's not chaotic ( ... )

also we dun really like settings where only humans or demihumans are those that can use/have been affected by magic. or perhaps gods or monsters that mostly only exist to battle or for plot element (or stuff like dragons, which still have very human-like intelligence so...don't count as much as, say, a rabbit or a cougar).
plants cannot use magic because they does not has brains (nor can starfish, i guess), unless they've been changed to have brains in which case...we haven't worked on that so it either doesn't happen or nobody knows about it.

we have another setting that takes the other weird-cliche of "animal spirits than turn into humans but no special humans" and also adds a "human spirits that have special powers above normal humans" but dun have that fleshed out much.
