world building.

similar to earth and modern era tech. but magic! magic is unpredictable (chaotic/wyld-ish), though, so its not used much in society. when people (humans or other sentient species) use it there's always a chance of something going wrong, never less than 10% or more than 95% (more practice in it can raise one's success level; lack of success is unpredictable and may be disastrous or humourous or somewhere in between)
there are still large parts of uncivilized land because those are too touched by magic to allow for long term buildings (habitation is possible if one can adapt quickly, but is more often among animals). magic can create hybrids, normal between animal/animal pairs or plant/plant pairs (mineral/mineral is possible but less likely; something like animal/plant is not TECHNICALLY impossible but has never been documented and probably wouldn't live long). magic can create hybrids in a few different ways and the results of the same "equation" often gets a different solution when done at different times.
aside from the first few magic-fueled generations to build a breeding pool (where they can breed with either species in the mix, size and shape permitting, and the young always turn out the same 'type' of hybrid as the parent), hybrids are not able to produce fertile young with non-hybrids. (some hybrids can interbreed with other hybrids, like a human-lion and a human-tiger, or a wolf-rabbit and a coyote-rabbit, but it depends on genetics!)
there are a good number of human/animal hybrids that are sentient and take part in human civilization, but humans still out number them, and in many places they're treated like second class citizens (if citizens at all).

also some sketch-notes on jacob's make-up are here. decided against the bird-head (pbs easier to find if human, lol) but the rest is still valid (well, except for the one marked with an X).
