papers

Since I had to make a copy of some of our records (a birth certificate and Social Security card, to be precise) to complete some paperwork, I made a trip to the bank yesterday to get the items out of our safety deposit box. As I looked through the box, I also came across our kesuvah and my shtar gerus, which we keep there. It was the first time I' ( Read more... )

I hear you. I really wanted to frame my ketubah and hang it in the bedroom, but Hershy explained how it isn't done for all kinds of halachic and cultural reasons. It means so much to me though. I'm the first generation since my great grandma to have a kosher ketubah. :)

That's amazing. No wonder you want to hang it up on the wall.

I'm curious, what was Hershy's explanation as to why you don't put it on the wall? I just heard about this recently, and the person who mentioned it didn't know why.

Well, sometimes he says laughs at the middle eastern "Ostentatiousness" of framing one's documents, and once he said it was considered "bad mazal" to even have one's ketubah on hand. Some sort of cultural superstition that if you have your ketubah close by, you "jinx" yourself with ayin hara or something. Can never get a really straight answer beyond a few shrugs!!!

I might be wrong, but I thought your kesuba has to be in your house?

I think you just have to know where your kesubah is.

I was taught that also. That if you did not have your ketubah (or a copy) with you then you were not supposed to... you know. But most of the people I know just have the 1 original in a safety deposit box. I've not asked any rabbis lately about why this has changed.

Like some of the other commenters, I've been told that I just have to know where it is.

I've made copies of my gerus certificate and our ketubah and know just where to find them. I came across extra copies last week when I was looking through stuff trying to find something. It was weird rereading things like my probationary "agreement" from my conversion given all the crazy stuff that has happened since then.

I hear you! It seems like so much has happened since those documents were written (for both of us).
