Always and Forever
She announces over dinner at the agency that she's getting married.
And she asks for you to be her best man; because she thought having a maid of honor would create conflict (there were nine of them after all, and they all wanted to be that person).
Surprised, you say yes (reluctantly that your hyung gives you a look) and she beams at you, radiating with such happiness that you can't bear to say anything more. And as the whole group -- their alternate family in this busy lifestyle -' burst into excited chatter, you sit back sullenly.
The man she was seeing-- honestly, you knew him very well. Lee Donghae is a colleague, a good friend, a wonderful person and you knew he loves her with all his heart... as did she; but you are certain (in all the years you've known her, him) that you started hating Donghae that day.
But she looks so content, and your heart suddenly feels a dull pain...
--You are the manly type. You're the type who fights as long as you know you have the chance to make things right. And you would do everything you can if you knew you'd win over a situation... if given the right cause.
For once though, it's not the case.
A man also knows when to admit defeat, you think.
And so you immerse yourself in work. Singing harder, dancing harder. All day, it's work work work. You work so hard, so passionately that your members say they're tense just looking at you. You brush them off and tell them that if you didn't give your one hundred percent for the team, you wouldn't have reached to this stage with them. They agree with you one way or another. They don't ask questions, but you know they knew that something else was the matter.
Jaejoong is the brave one who beats you when you all get home. He goes and tells you how pathetic you are being. You find no reason to retaliate when he gives you a look only a friend of almost a decade can give, and accept the comfort he was willing to give.
The others soon follow suit, and you break down. For a brief time.
The night before the wedding, she calls you and asks you to accompany her. Your members urge you to accept and moments later, you're with her under a tree, looking at the stars.
You don't know what to make of this. And though your heart is aching, you study her--memorize her, as though this was the last moment you'll ever have alone with her.
She tucks her hair behind her ear, as she hums a song -- your song and hers (but did she still remember?). You smile slightly when she exclaims excitedly at the number of stars out that night. She's so beautiful, and your heart lurches again.
"Ne, Yoona?"
"Hmm?"
"Why did you ask me to be your best man?"
"Because we're friends."
"Yes, but you and Eeteuk are much closer than me."
She looks at you. "You and I go longer back than he and I."
You knew what she meant to say, and you sigh.
"Forever..."
"Was a long time ago," she says suddenly, turning to her side.
"It wasn't that long ago." You say quietly.
You see her smirk and she turns to you slowly.
"You gave up."
"I had no confidence."
She laughs; it comes out forced.
"That's a lie."
You lower your eyes from her gaze. "I'm sorry."
"But I was happy then." She takes your hand (you're surprised) and squeezes it.
"It may not have been the forever we had planned, but--I'm thankful. For what it's worth."
You meet her gaze once again, and she smiles -- leaning towards you, and kissing you softly. You hold yourself back from doing anything more.
You are the manly type. You're the type who fights as long as you know you have the chance to make things right. And you would do everything you can if you knew you'd win over a situation... if given the right cause.
This was not the case.
For your speech, you look at the guests, your friends -- then at her and say only one thing:
"Forever."
The band behind you begins to play a beautiful melody. Your song... and hers.
You step off the platform as she and her groom stood up to dance. You are a man, and so you hide your tears well.
A man also knows when to admit defeat, you think.
--her eyes are tearful when she meets you one last time before leaving. You give her a chaste hug and a kiss on her forehead.
Be happy.
She whispers, "Forever."
"Changmin." She lets go and you turn away. Her husband waits for her in the background, grinning widely as she approached him.
They kiss. The action full of love and promise, you almost smile.
"Goodbye."
You whisper -- to yourself, more than anyone else -- and your heart aches.
