Robert Jordan (James Oliver Rigney) [wikipedia] passed away yesterday. He was the author of the Wheel of Time fantasy series, as well as FAllon and Conan the Barbarian.

A fellow grad student who had read the first 11 books responded with a long string of epithets when someone mentioned the news in the office.....

Apparently he left behind detailed enough notes so that someone could finish it for him, but it's up to (IIRC) his wife and his publisher to decide whether or not they want to go that route. Or something like that. I know someone (Diana Paxson, maybe?) finished Marion Zimmer Bradley's last book when MZB died, and Kevin J Anderson and Herbert's son are still putting out Dune books. Not sure how things work with Dune, though, because I've only read the original.
