So it looks like mistresserin and I are going to San Francisco December 27-31. We tossed around a lot of destinations, including Washington DC and Seattle, but settled on California because neither of us have been there before, and... uh, it's warm. Duh.

We'll be staying at a hotel downtown and we'll have a car named Peyton for at least one full day. Any ( Read more... )

since you'll have a car you should check out muir woods. it's just a 20 minute drive from the golden gate bridge over in mill valley. we are talking red woods...

also you'll have to have dinner/drinks with me and the man... got it?

ha ha suckers! San Fran is frigid in the winter, not to mention wet and foggy.

But than again 50 is gonna feel like a sauna compared to below zero of Boston.

if you do want to go to Alcatraz, be sure to book in advance -- I've tried to go on the spur of the moment and it's always sold out.

there's a lot of nice walking around to do in SF: Coit Tower, Chinatown, shopping in the Haight. If the weather's nice, check out the botanic gardens in Golden Gate. If the weather's crappy, the Exploratorium in the Presidio is pretty cool and the SF MOMA has a great permanent collection.

1- Me and Elliott's favorite date ever was to eat at this tiny cheap place called Naan and Curry two blocks down, on the same street as City Lights Bookstore, and then browse for many hours at City Lights. You may even spot Lawrence Ferlightetti, who runs the store, if you hang out long enough in the poetry room. One time we saw Owen Wilson too.

2-I second Muir Woods, it is by far the most beautiful place on the planet I have encountered thusfar. If you feel adventurous take the hike from Muir Woods to Muir beach and climb the big hill at the beach. Or just drive to Muir Beach, or Stinson beach, a bit farther down highway 1, the drive is spectacular.

3-Haight Ashbury is good for hippie nostalgia, The Japanese tea garden in Golden gate park is pretty, and you should hop the BART into Berkeley and spend a few hours on telegraph ave. which is like Thayer Street, only bigger, and it has amazing bookstores and used clothes, and yummy food.

4- I think you'll like BART.

5-Um. I really miss the Bay Area. Damn you.
