The male extends his wings
puffs his chest
elongates his neck
and watches
as our canoe
glides along the surface of the lake.
We know his spouse and
just-hatched nestlings are not far.
They rest concealed in the tall brush
on the side of the lake where there are no houses.
I sweep my hand through murky water
beside the bank of the lakeside.
