In 1993, when AOL was the only game in town, I had it. You had to push NO on the screen about 4 times if you didn't want something, and once I hit enter by mistake, causing a $300 bill. I refused to pay, and they screamed bloody murder.

I cancelled the card right after the second installment of the "bill".

I then contacted the better business bureau and my credit card company.

Cost to me: $100 and much much aggrevation.\

Good luck,. my friend.

AOL ran a special w/a satellite setup a couple of Christmas' ago, through Circuit City: TV and high speed Internet service on one antenna. TV worked great, but they were never able to get Inet access set up properly (I gave them 3 mos, because no cable company had made it out to our area before then). I took the whole thing back to CC and cancelled; we received continuing bills from AOL. I contacted them to explain we had not received service; they told me I could not cancel through CC, but had to contact them, by letter, separately, and continued to tally up the charges ( ... )

AOL is unfortunately known for that. They're like one of those venus-fly traps - easy to get into, but difficult to escape.

My wife managed to cancel her membership once, and for two years after that they would call us up and send us mail asking us to join up again!

I don't mind mail "asking" someone to rejoin....

It's threatening legal action on a canceled account, and refusing to refund money that really bothers me....

Sigh...
