Because this had been the only pleasant part of November so far.
We just had a remarkable streak of warmth--seven consecutive days of 70s. This is unheard of for November in Chicago. It's rare to have four or five days of 70s total during this month, much less in a row. It all ended with a cold front yesterday that brought strong winds and brief but heavy rain. I don't know how much we got at the house as our weather station got blown over. I do know that dad went outside to clean up a few things, but realized he'd forgotten to do the umbrella for our deck table. Except he remembered this right as the rain was starting, and when he opened the back door, this blast of wet wind got him and he scurried to close it back up again. Yeah, you're not getting the umbrella. (It was fine.) Also, he was sitting on the chaise, facing the windowless wall, and talking about how much lightning there was. I was doing dishes and could see constant flashes out the kitchen window--uh, how can you tell? Oh, that's right, he has what I term "creepy cam," which is one of the cameras on the house (he has one out front, in the peak of the garage), that faces the yard and beyond. He was using that to look outside, not the window about two feet to his right. Weirdo.
We then had the reverse temperature today: Whereas it was 74F when I came home yesterday before the storm, it was now 47F. Brr. I'm back to wearing pants in the house. I mean, okay, climate change is bad, getting away from long-term averages is bad, but not gonna lie, I'm a fan of 70s. It was unbelievable to leave the house a day or so ago and to walk out without a jacket and it was pleasant and warm. Comfortable. Springlike. And then today I had the winter coat. Boo.
Due to yesterday's storms, the National Weather Service didn't put anything out until today, but
here is the link to their write-up on the string of incredible weather. The 8th and 9th tied (with two other instances) in eighth place for the warmest November days on record, at 76F. We haven't been this warm in November since 79F on 11-5-78, when I wasn't quite a year old. We set three record highs and tied a fourth. Now, we're back to average, even a little below; our temps at 6 AM were 30+ degrees lower than 24 hours earlier. Ouch.
But at least it didn't snow.
