When staplers attack

These next few days are supposed to be the hottest of our recent heat wave--highs in the mid-90s. As such, I've decided to wear skirts. When it's just pushing 90F, I can still wear pants, but above that I start overheating. I was bummed to discover the top I wanted to wear was in the wash, but I have this multicolored tank top that would work, and hey, I got to wear the new bracelets I made a couple weeks ago. They match perfectly with it.

I can't wear a tank top by itself to work, especially one with spaghetti straps; baring arms is not professional. I have this pink button-front top with eyelets that I wear over stuff like that. I was worried I'd have to button the shirt--I'm not sure that would happen right now, but I didn't know how much the tank top would cover. Good news, it went several inches past the top of the skirt, so I was in no danger of baring my midriff. Talk about unprofessional. Also blinding. And, when I wear skirts, I don't wear socks or hose, and I wear my flats since the rest of my work shoes would be too clunky. Yep, I go bare-legged. It's comfortable for me.

My boss was in the kitchen area today getting a cup of coffee when he started talking to me about something. I had walked toward him, then was coming back to my workstation when a freak situation came up: Somehow my pink eyelet shirt caught on the stapler I keep nearby, knocking it off a counter, and it landed on my foot perpendicularly. The back end is what hit me, just beyond where my shoe stopped behind my big toe. My boss saw it happen, too.

I was temporarily stunned. I've had heavy items fall on my feet before, and broken bones, so I was like, uh, do I have a problem? Surprisingly, it didn't really hurt that much. It barely missed the bone, which is pretty good sized since I have bunions, and appears to have landed more on a tendon or ligament. It took a couple minutes, but a few scratches appeared on the area, which then confirmed exactly where it hit. I was concerned, and my boss offered to go get me an ice pack, but honestly it never swelled up and I had no issues standing the rest of the day. In fact, the first time it really started hurting, and not much, was after I got home and took my shoe off. It's a little red where the scratches are, but it's not really bruised, and there's some mild pain but nothing too bad. We'll see what things are like tomorrow, but I have may have gotten VERY lucky. It's my right foot; I sort of need it. But the manager started joking that I needed to wear steel-toed shoes to work now. No, dude; they don't go with the skirt.
