For days now, it's rained. And not just a little rain; there are multiple ticky marks lit up on our weather gauge. Two of the past five days had seven ticky marks. Two of the others had fewer, more like two or three. Today, at last check, we had nine. It poured for roughly a straight hour earlier today.
This morning, they were predicting the heaviest rain to come during rush hour, which it did, but I hadn't realized there would still be heavy rain during the morning. Around 11:30, I went and looked at my car, which was parked behind someone. The lake was there between the buildings, but it was far enough from my car that I thought I could last through another downpour or two. And then the next downpour came, and about an hour later I got an urgent call from someone in the back building saying I should move my car NOW. The water wasn't quite up to my tailpipe, but it was deep enough; I was looking at having to walk through several inches of water just to get in my car. Luckily my one coworker had some over-the-shoe waders that, while not full-on boots, were enough to get me into my car without getting wet. They were multiple sizes too big and I felt like I had clown shoes on or something. I'd also had to tuck my pants into my socks as well, but it worked and I was able to move my car without incident.
Around that time it got sunny, deceptively pleasant. It was humid as all get-out, but still; we hadn't expected to see sun. It didn't last too long--long enough for me to get home, but within a couple hours it was pouring again. Dad didn't get home until 5 and said Route 25 was terrible; all the culverts are full of water. Mom had called at 4:30 and said she'd stopped at the tollway oasis because traffic was horrible and she didn't know why. There hadn't been any reports of severe weather at that time but I knew it had rained heavily and viaducts were flooded. Then, the entirety of the 5 o'clock news was turned over to weather, even spilling over into the national news, because there was a tornado warning down south, in the vicinity of Midway Airport. Mom wasn't close to that but yeah, that's scary. She finally got home after 6:30, just after the power blipped for a second. We were glad she made it home; she said Route 31 was awful. Pretty much everything is awful right about now. I'd heard that North Avenue west of 290 was so bad they were having to use boats to rescue people from their cars. Years ago, my dad and I took that road daily, so I know it well; that's a bad place to get stuck anywhere. It gets residential there, too, so who knows if those families are dealing with flooding or what.
Out here, we had a river flowing through the yard. It does this every time we get a lot of rain, and the ground's just been soaked these past few days. There's no place for it to go so it just pools. I started joking that we won't have to worry about the neighbor dogs coming through the fence--they'll swim right over it. About the only critters who seem to enjoy this are the birds, because all the worms are coming out.
Anyone have a kayak they want to loan me? How about a canoe?
