Pray you won't fade away

So in my wanderings around the internet I found someone commenting about the myth of Daedalus and Icarus. For those of you that don't know the myth Daedalus builds both him and his son wings made of wax. He tells his son not to go too close to the sun, let the wings melt. Icarus gets bored floating in the middle and starts flying higher and ( Read more... )

I like that article. As much as I love my dad, and even think of him as a feminist at times...he did constantly make jokes when I was growing up about hiding in the bushes with a shotgun when I went on dates, etc. I sometimes wonder if his attitude is partly responsible for my struggles in dating. (Then last time I was home, he basically told me I need to lower my standards and "give boys a chance." grr, dad, wtf?)

*cough* Okay sorry, the comments in your blog are not a place for me to hash out my daddy issues. :P

I've always loved the story of Daedalus and Icarus, ever since I saw a "Book of Virtues" cartoon about it when I was a little kid. I ended up naming one of the main characters in a novel Daedalus. While I think it was indeed originally intended to be about arrogance, I really like this alternate interpretation as well.

Yeah parents leave a lot of little scars on us. We're just left to deal with whatever psycho-nonsense they have left us with.

It was originally intended to be about arrogance, but I rather thought it was a new look at the same myth that I have heard since sixth grade. It made me think, especially since the new interpretation was almost complementary to Icarus.

The daughter is not an extension of the father or the brother or the family. She is her own individual and deserves to be treated as such.

You are so right about that - she deserves to be her own person, not who her father and brother have planned for her :/

And it still shocks me that the idea that brothers and fathers need to defend their daughter's virginity with shotguns and the like is still such a prevalent pattern.

Yeah he was. It's not surprising that so few have sympathy for him, even though he was just doing what most children end up doing sooner or later. They press the limits of what they are capable of for a thrill or just to see how high they can go.

Yes, I always felt Icarus was arrogant and ignorant to the dangers of flying closer to the sun.

I love your posts.

I think the dads out there now that try to show machismo about protecting their daughters are really just trying to compare dick sizes to other dads.

I am glad I can find interesting things to ramble about.

That's pretty much it. I just get kind of pissed when other humans are used for a dick substitution.

I had to quit watching TLC's Gypsy series because of the how the girls are treated (but boys get a pass on being pigs).

Yeah, like I won't listen to certain songs because of the message they send. I get very angry at double standards.
