I agree. There's gotta be some sort of child super labor laws or something. Even in Gotham. I remember a long time ago I was talking to someone who thought that Batman's relationship with Robin was actually pedaphilia. I don't know if I whole-heartedly agree with that, but there is something creepy about keeping your ward in spandex and booties.

What the fuck else was Dick Grayson supposed to do? His parents were dead, and the circus that he had been with since his birth was run by mobsters, or at least, borrowed money from mobsters, and then couldn't pay it back, so their main attraction was SLAUGHTERED IN FRONT OF A LIVE AUDIENCE! Fighting crime isn't that much safer than his previous life ( ... )

Unfortunately however by this same argument, we should have no problem drafting children from the inner city to fight our wars for us, because it's not like their previous life was all that safer. I know that this is a silly argument, you know, being that it is concerning comic book super heroes and the reality created by the whim of several men who couldn't get laid if it was sitting on their face: That being said, when Bruce Wayne took little Dicky under his wing he was obligated to provide for him a safer home than the one that he knew, and not to make him the walking bullseye that draws attention, and bullets away from his darkly dressed, bullet proof batsuit.

but wasn't it Dick's thrust for vengeance what drove his desire to be a cape clad sidekick? Bruce was thrust into parenting and wasn't all that trained at raising a teenager. He just did what he thought best - if the kid is going to try and get revenge he might as well be equipped with the best equipment and have the best training to ensure more safety.

Indeed, this sounds like brilliant public policy. If they're just going to grow up to be junkies and gangmembers anyway, much better to send them off as cannon fodder.

It sounds good, but in practice... anonymous May 26 2005, 02:05:50 UTC
Unfortunately, arming the delinquent youth of America and expecting them to keep us safe could have disastrous results. One science fiction story I've read in the last few months touches on this very topic. A bunch of punk kids are given special training, to make them productive members of society. In the end, they attempt to overthrown New York City, and damn near succeed, because all their training gave them the power to unite gangs under a common goal. It could work, but I wouldn't bet on it ( ... )
