Thursday was another early morning, though clear this time: with promise of a perfect, bluebird day for our last on the slopes. There had been a heavy frost, and the snow which fell on Wednesday was still lying around the edges of the lake and in the shadowed parts of the surrounding hills.

Mountain deprivation is a good excuse. The air is thinner up there, I hear, so it will take you a while to get used to the air back here. Kinda like 'the bends' but in reverse!
Winter in New Zealand next year? You evil, evil woman! I think I can make it. No skiing for me though; I tried it once and managed to plow into several small children. I'm scarred, scarred I tell you!

I plan to be in NZ for midwinter next year although the itinerary doesn't include skiing at this point. It may include soaking in some near-boiling sulfur-smelling water quite near the ski slopes so maybe you can join us for that after you've finished getting all cold and frozen and stuff.

Hanmer springs? I've seen pictures of that in the winter, and it looks fantastic.

Hanmer is a bit commercial for my liking so I plan to get to Maruia Springs if I can make it up there.

Yes, it's great in the winter. The snow falls, only to melt / evaporate a few feet above the water.
