It's the idea that everyone has something they're meant to do in life, or meant to become. That part, we don't have control over. But we do make decisions for ourselves on the way there.
Like, if you're meant to kill...

...if you're destined to eat a cake. You could either buy the cake, or make it yourself. But eventually, you eat it either way.
Once you really watch the light fade from someone else's eyes and know you've caused it, there's not much doubt left that the power of life and death rests in your hands.
