So Nikita, the CW's new show, premiered tonight. And I was super excited, because HELLO LEADING LADY OF THE SHOW IS AN ASIAN GIRL? WHAT I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MY WHOLE FUCKING LIFE. Aaaaaaaand to be honest, it was a mixed bag of thoughts.

The CW's site player is ugly. WHOA, NOW THAT YOU MENTION IT, I think Pyro is Nerd dude.

Also, agreed. I actually discount a lot of Serenity from my personal canon, but that end fight scene with River is just so pretty that I can't help it.

I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt (and I am by continuing to watch) by assuming that the reason Alex got so much focus is because they want to keep Nikita a ~mystery, but motives are always suspect. Maggie Q kicks so much ass though. She's super fierce. I guess in some way, they do need to show us the ~world we're operating in and that happens through Alex, but she's just so unengaging and I am honestly so done with pretty white chicks. Enough.

I was mostly just struck by the fact that we apparently need -yet another remake- of La Femme Nikita. What is with the fucking reboots. It is like the tv nostalgia decade in a way it has never been before. Nobody rebooted All In The Family or M*A*S*H.

That said, it is cool that Nikita is a POC this time around, so while I don't plan to watch here's hoping the white stranger bitch doesn't take over the whole show.

I think they just wanted another kickass female spy show, and it's easier to reboot than to come with a new show? I don't know.

I hope that it's because they're trying to set Nikita up as a mystery rather than them wanting to focus on the pretty white girl's storyline. But the latter is a likely possibility.

Well, I mean. I think it's okay to have a 'relatable' white girl if the POC lead is still the focus of the show. Like hopefully this bitch will be the Cameron to Nikita's House. Or something. You get me. I don't watch "House" but I feel like this is the comparison I mean to be making.

And yeah I think they're just trading in on the name recognition, which feels lazy to me. I just want to know why the Asian chick is called Nikita of all things but maybe she is like Mongolian and from Siberia or something. That would be cool, let's see some snowshoe combat.

Yeah. I mean, plot-wise, apparently she was adopted? Which, whatever, but at least it's not like Asian parents were naming her that? Who knows?

I actually thought the pilot was pretty awesome. BUT ACTUALLY ALEX IS SO GENERIC I COULD CRY. DO NOT CARE. STOP FOCUSING ON HER. Nikita is awesome though. And I don't remember who Thom is. Was he the dude who was going on his first mission the next day?

AND SECRETLY I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH SHANE WEST FROM MY BEING 12 YEARS OLD DAYS.

And I guess it's too much to put two POC leads on a show and expect white people to identify with them when that's what they ask of POC all the fucking time. Yeah I have never really understood that? I mean, yes, race is an issue but it's not THE ONLY issue - there is a lot of common ground here, and whether someone is not white or white, if they're a character on TV they probably have an interesting life. I hate shows that reduce POC to just the C part, and ignore the P part.

The existence and prominence of Alex on this show is why I'm prying to god every night that Undercovers winds up being good and popular, so other TV producers of shallow entertainment for people like myself will get on the bandwagon.

I mean, at heart, Nikita is supposed to be about, well, Nikita, so I hope the storylines get filtered through her and Jaden. That being said, I'm pinning a lot of hopes on UnderCovers.
