I recently read Charlotte Frost's entry about some things in fandom being too personal.  I enjoyed it a lot.

I can't help but sympathize, actually, with the shy people she mentioned.  As someone with Asperger's, all my people skills have been hard-won (and are still low).  I like people; I'm interested in people; it just doesn't translate easily ( Read more... )

I think you make a good point about shame. That's definitely a part of it for some people. I learned, when I was young, to never share what I was really thinking about something, because the fact that *I* liked something automatically made it unacceptable and something to be sneered at. So... yeah.

I hate that I know what you mean (even though I don't feel like I was literally sneered at as much as ignored). And I hate that you had to deal with that. Hope you don't feel that way any longer, though. (Thanks for your comment.)

I actually had someone tell me recently when I mentioned CabrilloCon (not slash, mind you), that "I wouldn't talk about that aloud if I were you".

Augh! I wrote a long reply but it got eaten. :( Basically, I wonder if it's because the person had a bad experience telling other people about their fannish interests? I mean I've learned to keep quiet about things offline mostly. :)
