Why insectivore diet?

Mar 30, 2010 12:38

First of all. Before I start this ramble of mine, I want to point out that no, I've never indeed owned a hedgehog before and therefore, no, I don't claim to know for certain what sort of food and/or diet is THE best when it comes to feeding pet hedgehogs.  I do want to learn more and I don't mind being corrected if I'm bluntly wrong --as long as ( Read more... )

I agree with you. Your diet seems strange to me, but really, all my hedgehog gets is cat food. Mind you, that's because she won't eat any other type of food :P ( ... )

I love long ass comments so no worries! :)

Yeah, I hear some hogs really prefer cat food to insects (Maybe cat food tastes better or maybe it's just easier to eat? Who wouldn't prefer that? :D), but people in (our) forums have said that sometimes you can get your hog to change their mind with a little stubborness. They simply just keep offering the insects and even lessen the other foods. The little one is bound to at least taste them when they're getting hungry -- of course if he still refuses then that's that. I think it definitely depends a bit on the personality :)

I know it sounds cruel to some, but it's pretty much what I'd do with kids at work when they refuse to eat just out of spite so. "Fine, leave the table then but I guarantee you'll be hungry soon enough!" -- and a little later they'll come back, going, "I'm huuuungry" and I get to be all "I TOLD YOU SO!" :DD

I wish our baby will have as good immune system as Bella so that I don't have to worry all the time :D

It doesn't sound cruel at all, don't worry. It is exactly like dealing with children. I dunno, our breeder simply fed catfood with buggies as treats. So when she wouldn't take them as treats, I just let her be XD She still eats chicken, so she gets protein from that. We eat chicken a lot.

I'm really interested in seeing how Hugo's meal plan goes! I know you got a lot of bullshit from the comm, but I'm actually interested. Different people do it different ways, you know?

If it works out, I'd like to be able to talk to other people about it too. My breeder may be interested :D

Thank you so much for that! I couldn't agree with you more; different people, different ways :) I'll definitely keep posting about our meal plan/s and how it goes. I've been an admin in so many forums and lj communities during these years that honestly, a little bullshit cannot scare me away (though yeah, it wasn't creating the nicest feelings either ( ... )

Super awesome! My pig is super picky, but I agree--when I leave it there long enough, it disappears one way or another. It didn't know that about raw carrots, or avocados- he loves chocolate and avocado~ I have a bad habit of studying and eating on the ground and he had the tendency to climb on my plate when I'm not looking and Numnumnum T_T He's a play pen now, so yay not that problem ^^

I should post pics....I have a new little one from a rescue--Coco, who's super huffy but super cute and super active. She's a bit more adventurous when it comes to eating new foods, so maybe I'll try cockroaches with her :3

I need to cut down on the coffee...

Noo, don't cut down on the coffee it makes you ramble like this ;) Ramble = GOOD.

Yeah, chocolate is actually dangerous to most animals, kinda like a poison or something :/ I'm not sure why though, haven't got around to studying that one better. Haha, sounds like my rats -- they would climb all over the place and steal my food as well :D Didn't matter if the food was on the floor or the table, the younger guy always found it.

Oh and I'd REALLY love to see pictures!!

It would've been easier to edit my own comment but I'm in a hurry, off to work :D

Just wanted to add; I definitely encourage you to try cockroaches, hee (and other sort of insects! Mealworms are high in fat, yes, but if they and other insects replace most of the cat food, then it really shouldn't be a problem ;) -- it's all about a good mix and balance) and if and when you do, let me know how it went :)

Chocolate is one thing I knew, even never have had pets, was something he shouldn't have. Why is it that creatures want was is bad for them? Humans tend to do the same thing though...:3 I will post pics soon--my semester is drawing to a close and I'm a bit disorganized (I admit! That was a complete under-exaggeration T_T) but I know they are some where on my computer.....:3

Here's some old ones though...http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2217354&id=30319567&l=004786d16b

Vander was adopted by a friend who has fallen in love with hedgies, and is a very happy hog in a family of 6+ - the cat and dog, and a ton of fishes!
